Would you like to know where all those hours in your workday disappeared from? Turns out, a sneaky café trip might be to blame! According to a survey that’s probably got your coffee cups trembling, the average person spends 50 hours a year shimmying over to the café counter. But fear not, fellow office explorers, because your favorite beverage is here to save the day. Need to rev up your engines before tackling that mountain of emails? It’s okay, you’re not the only one. Apparently, 60% of us morph into gurus of organization, 59% become sip-and-savor lovers, and 55% are email warriors first thing in the morning.

While the world runs on coffee (66% to be precise), there’s a sneaky love affair with icy delights. Yes, iced coffee (47%) beats trusty old water (45%), and even flavored water (30%) gets the nod.

The Coffee-Productivity Connection Under The Microscope

We’ve all been there – that moment when you’re staring at your computer screen, contemplating life’s greatest mysteries, and desperately waiting for that “ding” to signal your coffee is ready. According to a survey by Flavia, the folks behind those multi-beverage systems, 77% of coffee enthusiasts need two cups of that caffeinated brew to unlock their inner productivity guru on a workday. Is coffee the key to productivity, or are we all just summoning caffeinated spirits?

Mondays – they’re like a cliffhanger in a sitcom you never asked for. And guess what day 24% of survey takers confessed they needed the most coffee? Monday! Maybe it’s because Mondays feel like a villain in disguise, and coffee is our trusty sidekick fighting off the Monday blues.

Our workspaces have turned into beverage paradises! We’re not just sipping on hot coffee (77%) like it’s our job (well, technically it is), but we’ve got water (70%) flowing like a mountain stream. And iced coffee (64%) brings that cool factor, while tea (62%) offers the classiest steeping experience. Feeling fruity? Juice (55%) makes a splash, and flavored water (51%) is like a party in a bottle.

“Over a third (37%) of those surveyed would like the ability to brew hot and cold beverages and more than a quarter (26%) want to be able to brew different kinds of beverages at work,” said Camille Vareille, VP, Head of Marketing Americas, Lavazza Group.

Not to mention the money game. Do you think that a daily trip to the café doesn’t make a dent? Think again! The average American is paying about 2.5 drinks per visit, which comes out to $16 each time. Think about it, if you’re café-hopping more than three times a week (you social butterfly, you), that’s over $2,800 a year flying out of your wallet.

“The survey revealed that nearly 87% of respondents were going into the office between two to three days a week. Over eight in 10 employees said having free beverages as a workplace perk would make them feel valued and offering free beverages was the most requested perk to encourage employees to work from an office. Investing in an array of beverages on-site can not only save employees time and money but also help with bringing them back into the office,” Vareille added.

WHAT PERKS WOULD ENCOURAGE ON-SITE EMPLOYEES TO WORK FROM AN OFFICE?

  • Free beverages – 46%
  • Required breaks – 45%
  • Free food – 45%
  • On-site gym – 43%
  • Office lounge/social area – 42%
  • Ability to bring pets to work – 36%
  • Ability to bring a kid to work – 29%
  • On-site games – 22%
  • In-person employee clubs – 14%

16.4 minutes per cafe visit x 3.42 visits to the cafe per week = 56.088 minutes a week, x 52 weeks in a year = 2,916.576 minutes or 48.61 hours a year

$6.27 spent per beverage at a cafe on an average visit x 2.56 beverages per visit = $16.0512 per visit x 3.42 trips a week = $54.895104 spent per week x 52 weeks = $2,854.55 a year

Survey Methodology:
