“Many people often think you have to compromise taste and flavor in order to eat ‘healthy,’ but this mentality of thinking you have to sacrifice is often what leads us to crave the foods we deem ‘unhealthy’ and drives our FOMO when you see an indulgent snack on social media that you would rather be having,” said Ashley Hawk, dietitian, and Food Network star from the TV show ‘How Healthy Happens.’ “My simple advice to my followers and clients on how to combat this is to start with whole foods that are naturally delicious and use them as the backbone of your recipe.
“For example, instead of going straight for that slice of cheesecake, try a cheesecake dip and use fresh apple slices to dip with it. This allows you to still indulge in the sweet flavors we all crave, but the fiber and other nutrients from the apples will actually allow you to feel satiated and avoid overindulging.”

The Role Of Flavor In Healthy And Indulgent Food Choices
Oh, the epic debate over snacks! Whether to be healthy or indulgent, that is the question! In fact, the survey reveals a wild split on this snacking dilemma!
For 61%, it’s all about those healthy recipes that not only appeal to their taste buds but also satisfy their cravings for ease (60%) and the joy of sharing with others (49%).
62% of people love treating themselves! Those “indulgent” recipes have them drooling over their simplicity (61%) and the promise of an explosion of flavors (59%).
And 41% of these indulgence lovers find them oh-so-trendy and Instagram-worthy! #FoodGoals, anyone?
Speaking of social media, it’s like a battleground for recipes out there! 69% are giving heart-eyes to healthy recipes they spot on the interwebs. Not to be outdone, 63% are smitten by tasty recipes. I admire the love triangles of the culinary world!
Additionally, when they’re in their own kitchen lab, 73% confess to putting in extra effort to make their meals picture-perfect for social media. Move over, Van Gogh; it’s all about the food art!
Yet, what about sharing the love (and food)? When they try out a new recipe, 46% selfishly savor the deliciousness for themselves but also play nice and share the culinary joy with their family (25%) or friends (10%). You’ve got to spread the yumminess, don’t you?
“With searches for healthy recipes being just as popular as searches for indulgent recipes on social media, it’s clear consumers don’t want to miss out on either,” said Cecilia Flores Paez, Head of Marketing at EnvyTM Apples. “There is a real sense of FOMO when it comes to flavor, which is why taste is important to consumers—even when it comes to the purest form of snacks, such as an apple.”
